Our goal is to help ensure a healthy environment for current and future generations, and we believe that every business has a part to play and a responsibility to uphold. We are proud of our commitment to the environment, our achievements and the recognition we’ve received for our environmental efforts. This commitment to a more sustainable society is evident in our three primary environmental objectives:
We have taken on the responsibility of contributing to biodiversity protection through habitat enhancement on the land we own, through leading environmental education programs and through promoting environmental research for innovation in our products at our research and development facilities.
We continually work to decrease the amount of natural resources required for our products and processes through operational improvements and our product designs. We also continue to decrease the amount of waste we generate. For example, three of our tire manufacturing facilities have achieved zero-waste-to-landfill status.
We continually work to reduce emissions, not only in our direct footprint, but also within the lifecycle of our products. Our company’s goal is to achieve a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2020 and a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2050 and beyond.
Changing the way we think about and work within our environment requires a team effort. Our One Team, One Planet initiative ensures that we’re committed to doing our part. Whether it’s donating land near our facilities, assisting local communities through our Fuel the Cause campaign, or improving the fuel efficiency of our tires, we’re constantly seeking ways to help ensure a healthy environment for current and future generations.
We are currently leading the charge for alternative and renewable sources for natural rubber by exploring uses for the guayule shrub, which has qualities almost identical to natural rubber that makes it a valuable source for tire-grade rubber in commercial applications. Through this innovative project and others like it, we’re moving closer to achieving our long-term vision of manufacturing products from raw materials that are fully renewable and sustainable by 2050, because what really matters is leaving the world better off than we found it.
